Old School Valentine’s Traditions That Need To Come Back
Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. And if you’re reading this post in the summer or fall, this could still apply. Because after all, Valentine’s Day is just another day. You should really be showing your Valentine you love them all year round. But after having a discussion in studio this morning, Pebbles and I decided there are some fun Valentine’s traditions that we experienced as a kid that really need to come back.
Candy hearts: Hear me out here. Remember those candy hearts? The actual candy was made by the New England Confectionery Company, or Necco, before being purchased by the Spangler Candy Company in 2018. The tiny hearts had message on them like “Be Mine,” “Kiss Me,” “Love Me,” “Date Me,” and so on and so forth. They are still sold today, but nothing said Valentine’s Day more when you were a kid than getting those perfectly thought out candy hearts on your desk, in a card or in your locker.
Actual Valentine’s Day cards that you handed out to the class: Remember buying those cards that you filled out for your entire class? The cards came in one box and had a ton in them but they were all the same. You could pick your favorite theme. You’d spend your entire night before filling them out for each kid in your class. But the one you REALLY liked may get a more personalized message.
Single carnations: Remember when you were in school and usually a sports team was raising money by selling carnations with a message? You could order one, add a message and have it delivered to your crush during lunch. Yes carnations are “filler flowers” according to Charlotte of Sex and the City but back then, they really meant something.
Regardless of which of these traditions you choose, or maybe you start your own traditions, just remember…Valentine’s Day is coming and DON’T FORGET to make your loved one feel special.
