Record Cold Temps Hit The US, Here’s What NOT To Leave In The Car

This week we'll be seeing record cold temperatures in the United States. Even states and regions not used to this type of cold will be getting hit. More than 220 million people will be getting blasted with not just cold but some snow will be hitting states as far south as Florida. The governors of Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi have declared states of emergency. Travel can and most likely will be affected to some capacity so it's important to double check all of your travel plans.

That being said, it is important to remember there are some things that can't survive in the cold, specifically in your car. USA Today posted a list of things you should not leave in your car when temperatures hit below zero. We are adding a couple of things too in case you just aren't thinking of it.

First, any types of soda. When the temperature gets below 32 degrees, pressure can build up leading the can or bottle to explode and leave a big old mess in your car. It's happened to me. Don't do it!

Next up, aerosol cans. They too can explode if they get too cold.

Eggs. You may not think of eggs being left in the cold but if they freeze, and the shells crack they aren't safe to eat.

Canned food. The food inside the cans can expand and bacteria can get in.

Electronics. When it gets too cold, the screens could get damaged and in general the device may not work.

Medications. Some medications may become unstable if too cold, specifically insulin.

Loved ones and pets. This is an obvious one but sometimes people forget. DO NOT leave loved ones or pets in the cold. Even short amounts of time can be deadly.
