(Photo by Justin Hamel/Getty Images)I have to admit, watching the all female crew launch into space yesterday morning on board the Blue Origin spaceflight was surreal and truly emotional. I honestly felt like I was witnessing an amazing moment in history and while I personally would never do it, I felt it was truly an unbelievable experience for those involved. Katy Perry, Gayle King, Lauren Sánchez, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen and Kerianne Flynn were the first all female crew since 1963. So why are so many celebrities criticizing the mission? After seeing the comments, I had a better idea.
First, Olivia Wilde posted on her IG story a meme that poked fun of Katy Perry getting off the ship with the caption "Billion dollars bought some good memes I guess." Olivia Munn shared some of the criticism earlier this month commenting: “I know this probably isn’t the cool thing to say, but there are so many other things that are so important in the world right now. What are you guys gonna do up in space? What are you doing up there?” It seems as if many believe the money it cost for the mission could have been used elsewhere and for a better purpose. Amy Schumer used the launch as a bit for her comedy saying: “So I’m going to space and I’m so excited. Lauren Sanchez, Katy Perry and Amanda Nguyen have been my guiding lights through this whole journey, which I just got called to be part of this space team this morning. And I’m loving it. I’ve always wanted to go to space, and also I just have to say, How high were the people who came up with the name for space? Were they like, ‘What should we call it? It’s got so much, like, space.’”
And finally, Emily Ratajkowski seemed to be the most vocal by posting her disgust on TikTok yesterday “You say that you care about Mother Earth, and it’s about Mother Earth, and you go up in a spaceship that is built and paid for by a company that is single-handedly destroying the planet. … Look at the state of the world and think about how many resources went into putting these women into space. For what?”
Regardless if you believe the mission was ridiculous or not, it certainly was a cool moment in history. It also made me think, if I had the opportunity to do it would I? Seeing as I hate flying in a plane, my answer is no. But what about you? Curious your thoughts and you can email us: getupcrew@hot969boston.com.
