“I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people.” – Maya Angelou

Tuesday, April 28th is National Superhero Day. The day was created in 1995 by employees of Marvel Comics, and is to recognize and celebrate both fictional and real-life heroes who make a positive impact on our lives.

Personally, I’m a Black Panther and Spider-Man girl, but I also recognize that the superheroes I appreciate the most, are the everyday people making my life, our communities, and the world a better place. As the Maya Angelou quote above says, heroes can be any of us who are trying to make the world a better place for all people. Although there is one part about the quote that I want to take a closer look at. The word intent with regards to being a hero.

I do believe that there are people out here who are intentionally doing things to help others. Some people are making a choice through volunteering, supporting, helping, etc. And there are others who are quietly out here making a difference, and a lot of times, without even knowing that they’re doing it. And they’re doing it joyfully.

When I think about the heroes in my life, there’s obviously my parents, other family, friends. But I also think about my neighbor Jimmy who helped me when I was struggling with a large package on my porch before I had actually moved in. He’s also helped me with shoveling, putting my trash cans on the street when I forgot, and so many more things, large and small, without even thinking about it.

Who’s the “Jimmy” in your life? Or how are you a “Jimmy” in someone else’s life? There’s a saying that “all heroes don’t wear capes,” and it is so true. Think about the people who have helped talk you through a big decision, the ones who meet you for coffee when you’re going through a tough time, the people who call to check on you, the ones who help you through life with things big and small. And once you think about those people, think about how you can be that for others.
This week, thank the superheroes in your life, and do your best to be a superhero to someone else. You’ll make their, and your, life better and brighter.

Positively yours,
Pebbles 💜
