I was recently having a conversation with a friend, and we were talking about the future, possible opportunities, and life struggles. This is a friend that I hold in high regard, and someone who I believe is incredibly talented. At one point I turned to them and said that I wish they saw themselves the way that I see them.
I believe this is very common and we’ve all had moments with family, friends, or colleagues, who we wish could see themselves in the same light that we do. People who are talented, kind, inspirational, and a long list of other positive traits. But for whatever reason, they just don’t see it.
I know how difficult it can be for us to see ourselves honestly at times. We look in the mirror, and many times can only see our flaws. We reflect on our talents and skills, and can only see what we lack. We are so incredibly tough on ourselves, that so many times we refuse to see what’s right in front of our faces. We’re all pretty awesome people. We all have talents, skills, and qualities worthy of praise. But so often, we choose to ignore them.
So what do we do to change that? One suggestion I have, just based on my own experiences and thoughts, is to ask a few people close to you. People who you feel you are honest and authentic with, and who you feel know you well. Ask them how they see you as a person, and try to just listen without pushing back or commenting on what they’re saying. Then part 2 of that would be to sit with your thoughts about what they said. Do you see what they do? What do you agree and disagree with? Why? Ask yourself some questions about the process and see what it brings up. I’m sure it will be an eye-opening process that will hopefully get you to agree with, embrace, and internalize all the good things they had to say.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and I hope you’ll head into the new week with a fresh perspective, and an opportunity start to see a beautiful new reflection of yourself.
Positively yours,
Pebbles 💜
