Things Made For Kids That You Still Love As An Adult
I saw something that caught my eye this morning. It was a story about products made for kids that you still love as an adult. This could be a number of things for a number of different reasons. When you ask each member of the Getup Crew, the answers come from a variety of places.
Ramiro: any Disney movie or animated Pixar type of movie. “They’re fantastic. They’re better than real movies.” He of course will watch them with his kids but really doesn’t need to.
Pebbles: Picture books. “I love them! So much joy and life lessons in them. And just children’s books in general.”
Melissa: Blue box mac & cheese. When people try to make mac & cheese as adults they ruin it by putting all kinds of extra crap in it. The basic blue box with the three simple ingredients is perfect.
Leroy: cartoons and certain video games
We asked our listeners their answers and we’ve gotten a ton of answers.
Tanya: “Spongebob:
Radha: “Disney everything”
Alyse: “Trix yogurt”
Now when you look at reasons why adults may latch on to child like things, there are scientific reasons. Many studies show that adults like to feel like kids and continue to play with toys and eat kids’ foods because it helps them feel young. Other studies show that holding onto child like things helps people cope with unfortunate childhood memories or to recapture memories we’d like to revisit. Another big reason adults may want to play with kids’ toys or love child like things is as a stress relief.
More answers from our listeners:
Rebecca: lunchables
“Made for kids but still love as an adult, Oddly enough Play-Doh. Actually have a small jar in my desk”
“Thing I used to love as a kid that I still love now is cold SpaghettiOs, right out of the can”
“The cartoon Peanuts. Came from a dysfunctional family and Charlie Brown used to be my escape. LOVE THAT GUY TO THIS DAY”
There have also been studies asking if this type of childish behavior is okay. Many studies show that liking childish things can be a warning sign that you have not gotten over some childhood trauma. And somehow continuing to act like a kid may be a way of coping. We say, SCREW ALL THAT! If eating child hood foods, playing with games and toys makes you happy, GO WITH IT. We have one life and life is way too short to not do things that make you happy.
So play the games, eat the food, watch the movies. And forget the judgement.
